Greenwich Summer Music Series (nee POPS)
Last year the Greenwich Arts Council announced a new initiative – a three-concert variation on the former GAC POPS concert. The success of that initiative and with the positive feedback from our many sponsors has led to the expansion of this program.
Thanks to the ever-deepening partnership with the Town of Greenwich Department of Parks & Recreation, the GAC will present an entire summer series of free musical events – more than 25 concerts in all!
Starting on June 15, the GAC will host a special evening of music by Monteverdi performed by the Greenwich Music Festival, winner of the 2008 Chamber Music America/ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, under the artistic direction of Ted Huffman and principal conductor Robert Ainsley. The concert will take place at the St. Catherine’s Church Parish Hall at 8 pm.
In mid-summer the GAC will again work with the Town’s Parks & Recreation to present a variety of musical styles during the Wednesday evening concerts at Roger Sherman Baldwin Park and the Tuesday at noon musical showcases at the Greenwich Green.
The series will come to a theatrical finale when the Barrington Stage Company, from Pittsfield, MA, is welcomed back to present a concert version of a new musical theatre piece. This year’s selection will be See Rock City & Other Destinations, book and lyrics by Adam Mathias, music by Brad Alexander, and directed by Kevin Del Aguila. Fueled by a brilliant pop-rock score, See Rock City & Other Destinations ventures to tourist destinations across America, mapping out stories of sightseers who need to get a little lost in order to find themselves. Winner of the 2007 Jerry Bock Award and the 2008 Richard Rodgers Award, See Rock City & Other Destinations will be presented on Sunday, August 24, at 4pm. As in last year, Greenwich Library will play host by offering the Cole Auditorium for this eagerly anticipated event.
