CIRCLING
BACK AROUND:
Paintings by Philip Heilman and Mary Newcomb
March
4 28
Opening Reception: Thursday, March 4, 6 8 pm
Both
Mary Newcomb and Philip Heilman are abstract painters whose work, while
seemingly quite different, revolves around the same central concerns:
an intuitive and visceral appreciation of paint.
Newcomb
limits her palette to darkish greys and browns, that are swirled with
brilliant whites. This palette complements the circular composition
of many of her acrylic on canvas paintings. Her art implies a deep penetration
of space which pulls the viewer in a very intimate way into the core
action of the painting. Newcomb will also be showing examples of her
unique, wearable art creations.
While
addressing similar issues in his paintings, Heilman orchestrates the
painterly space quite differently. Highly colored, his oil on canvas
board works are exacting studies of designed space. Almost architectural
in composition, they imaginatively rework space and time in very personal
ways.
Handler
Adam
D. Handler: Born in the 80s
Paintings
April
1 to 25, 2010
Opening Reception: Thursday, April 1, 6 to 8pm
Mid-twentieth
century America, Vietnam, the British Invasion, Andy Warhols simplistic,
commercial Campbells soup cans have long enticed Handler. For
him, this era always depicted character, artistic freedom, and liberation
from the man. Though born in the 1980s, the artist
often speculated upon the feelings and emotions of the period that remain
today. That era in particular spurred his interest to create paintings
that captured the rebellious energy of the time, while transforming
the imagery into contemporary works that relate to his own generation.
Todays politics and economics, social interactions, views on love,
life, and death are all compressed into his mixed media works. For Handler,
using written words alongside commercial imagery, and contrasting it
with rapid brushstrokes and intense color, creates a modern scene that
allows for the viewer to create their own personal , interpretive narrative.
DAVID
HAYES: SCULPTURE
April
30 June 5
Opening
Reception: Thursday, April 30, 6 8 pm
David
Hayes is a sculptor who works in both monumental and smaller scale metal.
Slightly reminiscent of Alexander Calders stabiles, his work ties
highly colored and dynamic metal cut-out shapes together in robust abstract
compositions. Each segment aggressively engages the other to compose
an almost puzzle-like arrangement that changes dramatically as the viewer
approaches the sculptures from different angles.
The
exhibition is rounded out by paintings and sculptures by Richard Burns,
and the daughters of both Hayes and Burns.
